Quinn, Edith Marie

Posted on August 13, 2015 by Maple Creek

QUINN – Edith Marie Quinn, 92 passed away Aug. 8, 2015.
Born Feb. 16, 1923 to Richard and Nellie Mutlow at McGee, Sask., she lost her mother at age eight and went to live with her grandmother. At age 17 she left to work in the Saskatoon area first,  then Regina as a housekeeper.  In Regina at age 20 she met Neal Mayer of Golden Prairie and was married Mar. 18, 1944. They farmed first in the Golden Prairie area, then a few miles west of Maple Creek.
In 1956 Edith was treated in Regina for cancer. She was so proud to have stayed cancer free for 59 years.  From 1966-69 Edith worked at the nursing home in Maple Creek as well as helping Neal farm.
After Neal died suddenly in 1969, she was finally reunited with her long-lost family in the Edmonton area, moving there to work as a nanny until 1971. In May 1971 she returned to housekeeping at Cypress Lodge, becoming head housekeeper there until she left in 1986.
In Sept 1971 she met Leo Quinn, marrying him Nov. 8 of that year, gaining a whole new family in the process. She looked after his father till he passed, nursed her husband Leo when he got cancer in 1988 until his passing in 1993, and remained close to Leo’s remaining brother Joe after that.
She enjoyed fishing, preserving, baking, crocheting, knitting, reading and devoted many years to caring for sick and elderly in their homes.  Edith volunteered for Legion bingos and flea markets as well as delivering Meals on Wheels into her 90s.  She also babysat several children over the years.
Edith was very adaptable, saying often “we take what comes.” Despite many sad and traumatic events in her long life, instead of bitterness,  those experiences softened her heart so she could make others feel loved and special.  She made the best of her circumstances even in the last year or two, having to accept help and eventually moving into Cypress Lodge in Feb., 2015 where she told everyone that she was happy and content living her remaining time where she knew the staff and the building. Many were the recipients of a hug or some teasing which also gave HER joy.
Predeceased by her parents, brother, two husbands, two nephews, two nephews-in-law, and several brothers- and sisters-in-law, she leaves to mourn her passing her sister Marion Balog (Edwin) of Mundare, Alta.; nieces Nellie Turner and Dorothy Sichkaryk of Fort Sask, Alta.; several great nieces and great nephews, great great nieces and great great nephews; brother-in-law Joe Quinn of Gravelbourg; chosen family Twyla and KC Racine, Laura and Tim Bodvarson (Kara and Joe Bye) of Maple Creek, and special friends Mike and Wally Weber of Maple Creek, and Dawn Raymond of Weyburn.
Funeral service  Aug. 15, 2015 at Maple Creek United Church, Eleanor Bowie officiating. Donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society.
