Maple Creek Composite School comes in second at drama festival

It was a busy weekend for the students of Maple Creek Composite School as they performed two plays for  the Region 3 Drama Festival.
Performing two plays was, of course, not enough as the students received 10 awards between the two plays.
Maple Creek competed and performed against two plays done by Swift Current Comprehensive High School and one play from Westcliff Composite School in Marengo.
Ross Scherger received two awards Saturday night for his work on “The Ten Best/Worst Things About High School”. Scherger received a Spirit Award, given to the student by the director for their hard work during the production, as well as an Certificate of Merit in Acting.
Justus Schneider also received Certificate of Merit in Acting for his difficult role as Fred in the school’s performance of “Mirrors”.
Mandla Mthembu received an Acting Recognition Award for his physical performance and energy in his role of Narrator #2 in “The ten Best/Worst Things About High School”.
Excellence in acting isn’t all the awards the school walked away with Saturday night. They also received numerous awards for the technical aspects of the plays.
Lane Friday received a Certificate of Technical Expertise for lighting design in “The Ten Best/Worst Things About High School”. Also for the same play Danielle Samson received a Certificate of Technical Expertise for her work in sound design.
Parker Campbell received two awards during  the award ceremony, both for his work on “Mirrors”. The first was a Spirit Award. The second was a Certificate of Technical Merit for set construction, specifically for the design of the mirrors used in the play.
For her work in “Mirrors” Jillian Teichroeb received an Excellence in Stage Management. Teichroeb was also the Stage Manager for Maple Creek Composite School’s other play.
“Mirrors” received the runner-up award for the Best Tech Crew. The play “The Other Room” by Swift Current Comprehensive High School won Best Tech Crew.
Best Overall Technical Performance was awarded to MCCS’s “The Ten Best/Worst Things About High School”.
The big award of the night – The Best Overall Play – was sadly not given to Maple Creek. “The Ten Best/Worst Things About High School” received the runner-up award for best over all play. Swift Current’s “Andromeda’s Galaxy” received the top place.
The winner of region 3 will move on to the provincials hosted at the University of Regina, May 5-7.
