HOBBS – Kenneth

The memorial service for Mr. Kenneth Hobbs, 75, of Eastend, Sask. was held Sunday, May 18 at 2:00 p.m. at Piapot Legion Hall.

Born in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan on June 5, 1938 to Samuel and Connie Hobbs, he was the baby of the family to three older sisters who doted on him. Ken grew up on the family farm in Carnagh district. Ken lost his mother when he was 16 years old and quit school to work for people in the district. In 1962 he bought Louis Wagner’s place in the Star Butte district where he would ranch for the next 52 years. His dad lived with him for 20 of those years on the farm.

Known to everyone in the community as “Uncle Ken,” he always kept everyone up to date with what was happening in the area over a cup of tea or a meal. He was an avid whist and crib player; he competed successfully with the Legion, even winning provincials one year. Ken was a councilor for the RM of Piapot for many years. He worked at the stockyards in Tompkins where he had a knack for recalling sales results long after the sale was over. He was a member of the Black Hills Grazing Co-op as well as the Piapot Legion. After a bout with cancer, he became a strong supporter of Relay For Life and Telemiracle.

He was predeceased by his mother, father, and sisters Phyllis Wright and Jean Scott, brothers-in-law Merton, Stanley and Ward, a niece and a nephew.

He is survived by his sister Rhoda Bertram, 16 nieces and nephews and a large circle of friends and neighbours.
