It has been a long time coming, but Maple Creek will soon have its own dental clinic.
The plan has been in the works for roughly three years, but there has always been something has always gotten in the way of progress.
Now, however, the lease is signed and renovations are underway.
Dr. Amres Perrett, of Medicine Hat, is looking forward to bring this service to the area.
“I’ve been working on this with Royce [Pettyjohn] for a few years now. Things are really rolling now,” said Dr. Perrett in a recent phone interview.
Perrett says there were a lot of things that got in the way over the years, but he had a vision to bring this service to Maple Creek.
Perrett has signed a three year lease with the Town to open Maple Creek Dental in the old RBC building at 202 Maple St.
The outside will remain the same, with the addition of signage. The inside will be completely redone, according to Perrett.
“It is a complete gut of the existing inside to make it into a dental practice,” said Perrett.
Everything inside the building will be brand new and top of the line, to bring the people of Maple Creek and surrounding area the best service possible.
Perrett described the new practice as being a “world-class facility” when all the renovations are completed.
Right now it is hard to say what hours the dental office will be open.
This vision for Maple Creek Dental is to have it open and operating on a full-time schedule to accommodate Maple Creek as best as possible.
“Just because we are in a smaller town does not mean we should compromise.”
A small community does not mean a lack of quality services, Perrett added.
The decision to open a dental office in Maple Creek came after a visit to the Town and Cypress Hills with his wife and four children.
Perrett said he was shocked to find there was no service available for the town and surrounding area.
“I felt sorry for the folks because they had to travel at least an hour to access this type of service,” Perrett said.
Perrett added having to travel for dental services often means having to take time off work and that isn’t always an option.
The decision to open in Maple Creek was an easy one for the dentist who grew up on a ranch and says Maple Creek brought back memories.
“It felt like home immediately.”
Opening a new business in a small town does have its risks, and Perrett is well aware of that.
He says he is nervous and opening the business is still a “scary thought.”
“There is never a guarantee, and here I don’t really have a model to base it off of because Maple Creek hasn’t had a dental office,” said Perrett.
Despite the nerves, Perrett has heard plenty of positive comments about the plans for 202 Maple St.
Having the townspeople of Maple Creek on his side has helped to calm his nerves.
“Everyone I’ve spoken to have been very positive and excited about it,” he said.
The new business will have the opportunity for job growth in the area, as Perrett said he will be looking for staff and dental assistants to work in the office.
As long as the renovations stay on time, Perrett plans to open the doors in early July.
