To the Community of Maple Creek,
I applaud the efforts of the Swimming Pool Fundraising committee, and encourage them to continue to apply for grants and hold fundraisers.
I believe that having recreation facilities in our community makes it more likely that seniors will be able to stay. Young professionals, like nurses, are in demand everywhere – we need to give them reasons to stay in our community.
To the argument that seniors shouldn’t have to pay for recreation facilities that they don’t use, and their grandchildren don’t live in town to use, I ask: Who paid for the recreation facilities you and your children used when they were young? Who pays for the recreation facilities in the communities where your grandchildren live? Do you send money to that municipality to assist in those costs, or are other grandparents helping to pay those costs?
The pool fundraising committee has done a great job so far, but have we reached the point where people are hesitant to continue to support fundraisers when there is no set date to start construction. And is it possible fundraise enough to keep ahead of inflation, let alone build the fund. >From past experience, we know that once construction has started, fundraising gets a huge boost.
Whether or not you or your family actually uses the facility, there is benefit to the whole community to have a swimming pool – to our business community, when people come to town to take swimming lessons and go public swimming; to our residents who don’t have to leave town for a week or two so their kids can take lessons elsewhere; to our children, giving them a great place to spend the summer, instead of other, less productive options. Let’s work together to make it happen now.
