Cole: Maple Creek thrived in 2021

Letter to the editor:
It’s time to count our blessings. Maple Creek has not only survived, but has thrived! Our established businesses are still standing. Thank you for persevering.
We have new businesses filling in the gaps. The Mainline Service building is becoming three new businesses. The old Shop Easy store is now the new home for The Salvation Army Thrift Store. Thanks to Majors Ed and Charlotte and the many wonderful volunteers – all while continuing the feeding programs and Christmas hampers.
We now have two pharmacies.
Melanson’s have opened up a new Wholesale Foods and Deli, after a total reno’ of the former IOOF hall.
Bob, the Cowtown Toy man, has expanded from the biggest and best toys, candy, puzzles, and book stores, to opening a stuffie store, before Christmas!
The old Jasper School turned museum, will stay open and get a much-needed roof, facelift, and ramp, thanks to volunteers and generous people who donated to it.
The Grotto Gardens has added more features including the Christmas Train with Mrs. Santa as tour guide amidst a splendid display of lights.
Pastor Hans wrote a book while recovering from a major stroke.
Our park, near the CPR, is now Hawrylak Park, thanks to Ellaine and Gordie and volunteers who made it a family-friendly park. The light display is excellent.
We have a brand new fire hall.
Chief Alvin Francis of the Nekaneet Reserve has stated that a gas station on Number One Highway is in the works. (A former student of mine, I am proud to say!)
A new winery is in the making too.
Our churches went online, reaching far more people than the four walls of their building.
Our hospital has stayed open in spite of staff shortages. Health workers have persevered. Thank you!
And, we are getting a new swimming pool! Thanks to the busy “new pool” committee and the ongoing great fundraising events, grants and donations, we are decreasing the cost and increasing the possibility to reality.
If you need a breath of fresh air, our beautiful Cypress Hills Park is 20 minutes away.
We had a Heritage Day, a Cowtown Christmas, and several toy and food drives.
What has made this all possible?
“Community” – You the people who worked through, volunteered, and donated your time, talents, and your hard-earned money! God bless you friends and neighbours!
