Lift station: Application for borrowing

DISREPAIR: The north lift station project in Maple Creek will come with a heftier price tag than first thought.

The north lift station project will cost over $1.6 million – more than originally thought.
About $1 million will come from money left over from the lagoon project. The Town will have to borrow for the remaining amount.
At the February 8 Town Council meeting, Councillors agreed to direct administration to borrow up to $700,000 for building the north lift station.
“We are going to go out and make sure we’ve got some good quotes for this,” said Tony Goode, Interim Chief Administrative Officer.
“We will approach the three financial institutions in town first before we do anything else.”
Goode added that the Town still needed to get permission from Sask Municipal.
“All this resolution does is get the ball rolling,” he said.
On Tuesday, the Town posted a notice that Council will meet to discuss interim borrowing of up to $700,000 over 25 years for building a lift station.
“The amount of said debt shall be payable upon receipt of funds from general tax revenue and utility revenue but not longer than 25 (twenty-five) years,” the notice said.

An inspection in 2020 had concluded that the north lift station across the tracks had to be replaced.
The lift station, which takes wastewater to the lagoon site, has been in a state of disrepair for many years. It is mainly underground.
Michelle McKenzie, the Mayor, said the new station would be similar to the one near the Willowbend Campground.

Grant writing workshop

Gillian Moch, the Town’s economic development officer, and Savannah Mass, tourism and communications manager, have been authorized to attend a virtual proposal/grant writing workshop via Zoom on February 22 and 23. It will cost $565, plus tax, per person.
Town Council also gave the go-ahead for Moch to attend a Southwest Saskatchewan Immigration Partnership (SSIP) Newcomers workshop on February 17 in Swift Current. The only expense is for travel, Councillors were told.

Valve to be bought

Gavin Graves, the director of operations, has been given permission to buy an actuator valve for the water treatment plant. The cost is $2,300, plus tax.
Michelle McKenzie, the Mayor, said a lot of effort had gone into trying to bring that number down.

Committee appointments

Councillor Al Fournier, chairperson, and Karen Newby, secretary, have been appointed to the 2022 Saskatchewan Lotteries Committee. Michelle McKenzie, the Mayor, said the chair of the Parks & Recreation Committee was normally on the committee, as well as two members from the RM.

Bylaw passed

A bylaw to establish false alarm fees for the Maple Creek Community Fire Department passed three readings and was adopted.
