Maple Creek Post Office closure due to strike

Posted on October 6, 2025 by Ryan Dahlman

Maple Creek Post Office has closed because of the Canada Post labour dispute.

A notice attached to the front entrance says: “Due to a labour disruption at Canada Post, this post office is closed until further notice.”

The notice says the nearest open post office is in Piapot.

“We apologize for any inconvenience.”

On Friday afternoon, Canada Post announced it had postponed plans to present its latest contract offer to its 55,000 workers, dashing hopes of a quick resolution to the dispute.

The Crown corporation, which is on track to lose $1.5 billion in 2025, said it will be reassessing that offer and will present a revised version to the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) when ready.

The change of plans, says Canada Post, was prompted by reforms announced by the federal government in Ottawa.

On Thursday, the government called for Canada Post to end home delivery and close some rural mail outlets to stabilize finances.

Negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement have been continuing for more than 18 months.

Earlier this month, the union said Canada Post’s offer of a 13 per cent pay increase fell short of its call for 19 per cent.

Canada Post says it remains committed to negotiating an agreement with CUPW, but the deal must help build a sustainable future.

On Friday, CUPW vowed to fight Ottawa’s announced reforms, describing them as a “direct assault on our public post office”.
