New building official for the Town of Maple Creek

Dan Knutson has been appointed as the building official for the Town of Maple Creek.

Last Wednesday, Maple Creek Town Council accepted a service agreement between Knutson and the Town.

According to the agreement, Knutson will provide building inspection services to citizens of Maple Creek.

Councillor Betty Abbott sought clarification over Knutson’s appointment.

She said the Town still had a relationship with Municode, and now Knutson was another option.

“So, when someone phones the Town and says ‘do I need a building permit for this?’, what happens?”

Michelle McKenzie, the mayor, said people would be told about both options – Municode and Dan Knutson – and given their numbers.

“That is exactly what we intend to do, to give the applicant or the inquiring individual the choice as to who they would like to reach out to,” said Barry Elliott, chief administrative officer. “They’ll have information on both firms and they’ll be able to decide for themselves how they wish to proceed.”

McKenzie wanted a leaflet or pamphlet available containing pertinent information. She also believed Town staff answering the phone should be able to give callers good direction.

Councillor Betty Abbott said it would be helpful if people received information about what does not require a permit.
