CPKC identifies dangerous rail shipments

Just under 11 per cent of Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) shipments in Canada are regulated dangerous goods, according to figures for 2025.

The remaining 89 percent of loaded shipments are non-regulated products.

The list of top 10 dangerous goods Canada-wide is headed by liquefied petroleum gases (16.3 per cent) and diesel fuel (15 per cent).

CPKC also identifies the top 10 products that make up 79.65 per cent of the dangerous goods shipments in Maple Creek.

The remaining 20.35 per cent are described as “many different products, each comprising 2.14% or less of the total”.

The top-10 list is headed by “FAK (Freight All Kinds) – contains dangerous goods” (21.9 per cent), followed by liquefied petroleum gases (13.08 per cent), ammonia, anhydrous (9.81 per cent), diesel fuel (8.06 per cent), environmentally hazardous substance, liquid, N.O.S. (6.15 per cent), gasoline ((5.85 per cent), sulfur, molten (4.81 per cent), ethanol and gasoline mixture (4.50 per cent), octanes (3.26 per cent), and methanol (2.14 per cent).

The CPKC figures were in a document on the agenda at the Maple Creek Town Council meeting on Wednesday, January 28.

Councillor Betty Abbott encouraged people to look at the CPKC document to see what trains are carrying as they pass through Maple Creek.
