Maple Creek Town Council has agreed to allow Waste-A-Way Septic Ltd. and Gotta Go Waste Removal to dispose of liquid domestic waste into the Town of Maple Creek’s main lift station.
At its January 28 meeting, Council agreed to authorize the disposal for three years at a monthly charge of $250 per firm.
In a report to Council, Barry Elliott, chief administrative officer, said the Town had been approached by the two firms about putting liquid domestic waste in the Town’s sewage system.
The Water Security Agency requires this permission from the Town, said Ellott, before it can issue a three-year permit to the firms.
“We currently allow both firms to dispose of liquid domestic waste in our main lift station and it will be their responsibility to follow all the requirements of the Water Security Agency Permit. Either party to these agreements may terminate the agreement by giving notice to the other party in writing at least six months prior to the end of any calendar year.”
Councillor Betty Abbott wondered whether separate resolutions should be made for each business.
“These are two separate businesses,” she said.
Elliott said the intention was for the Town to have separate agreements with each business.
“Those agreements will come forward individually to Council.”
Councillor Len Barkman said Council had toured the site where the planned dumping would take place.
During the tour, a question was asked about the possibility of a logbook to keep track of what was being put into the main lift station, and when.
“Is that going to be part of this?” he asked.
Elliott said he was aware of Council’s belief that extra security was needed at the site, and that a logbook had been mentioned, among other things.
“I am not sure where that is at, at the moment,” he said, adding that he could follow up this issue with Andrew Stevenson, the interim director of operations, and his crew.
“That was the intent to have a better handle on what is going in there and when.”
