Three killed near Piapot during grim period on Saskatchewan roads

Three people from Estevan were killed on Monday after their SUV collided with a parked semi on Highway 1 near Piapot.

They were identified as a 49-year-old woman, a 72-year-old woman, and a 75-year-old man. Their families have been notified.

A fourth person inside the SUV was taken to hospital with injuries described as serious.

The driver and passenger of the semi did not report any injuries to police.

The accident occurred on the eastbound lanes, about one kilometre east of the intersection of Highway 1 and Highway 614.

Maple Creek RCMP received a report of the collision at around 3.20pm.

A portion of Highway 1 was closed for a period after the crash, but was later reopened. The Saskatchewan RCMP said the Maple Creek detachment continues to investigate with the help of a Saskatchewan RCMP collision reconstructionist.

It has been a very grim period on Saskatchewan’s roads.

At about 3.45am on Sunday, a 33-year-old woman pedestrian from Beardy’s and Okemasis Cree Nation was killed in an accident involving a vehicle on Highway 212, about eight kilometres west of Duck Lake.

Mounties reported that the driver stayed at the scene. Neither the driver nor the passenger reported physical injuries to police.

Rosthern RCMP and a Saskatchewan RCMP collision reconstructionist are still investigating.

Outlook RCMP are also investigating a fatal accident.

At about 3pm on Thursday, July 16, they received a report of a car and motorcycle colliding on Highway #219, in the RM of Rudy.

The motorcyclist, a 57-year-old male from Saskatoon, and a passenger in the car, a 99-year-old male from Outlook, were both declared deceased by EMS at the scene. Their families have been notified.

The driver of the car was taken to hospital by EMS with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Highway #15 was closed for a period but has since been reopened.

Outlook RCMP continue to investigate with the help of a Saskatchewan RCMP collision reconstructionist.

Meanwhile, Saskatchewan RCMP continue to investigate the fatal head-on collision north of Regina that claimed the lives of Saskatchewan Roughriders defensive back Jayden Dalke, 30, and 22-year-old Bhishma Rajyaguru of Regina.

Lumsden RCMP responded to a report of a two-vehicle collision at approximately 9 pm on Saturday on Highway 11 between Lumsden and Regina. Officers, along with local fire and EMS crews, arrived to find a silver SUV and a black SUV involved in a head-on collision.

Police said the preliminary investigation determined the silver SUV was travelling northbound in the southbound lane when it collided with the black SUV.

The drivers, who were the sole occupants of their vehicles, were declared dead at the scene by EMS.

A GoFundMe campaign set up to help return Rajyaguru’s body to India described him as “a deeply responsible son, an honest friend, and a truly talented, passionate musician” who came to Canada in 2022 with big dreams and an even bigger heart. So far, the campaign has raised more than $88,000.

Another fatal accident occurred on Highway #1, approximately six kilometres east of Chaplin, SK.

On Monday, at about 1.45am, Swift Current/Morse RCMP learned of a semi-truck rollover.  Officers responded along with local fire and EMS. The sole occupant of the semi-truck was declared deceased by EMS at the scene.

He has been identified as a 26-year-old male from Brampton, Ontario. His family has been notified.
