MAPLE CREEK COMPOSITE SCHOOL: Grade 6 Car Wash fundraiser a splashing success

Cars around Maple Creek should have an extra sparkle – thanks to Maple Creek Composite School’s Grade 6 cleaning crew.

On Friday, up to 46 students armed themselves with hoses, buckets, sponges, and cleaning fluids to clear the summer dust off dozens of vehicles during a third annual car wash.

They also vacuumed interiors, removing dirt and grime left by countless shoes and boots.

As before proceeds from the fundraiser on the MCCS parking lot went to field trips and programming.

In 2024 and 2025, the event helped bring in speakers from the Hockey Hall of Fame, fund trips to Dunmore Dugouts, Eastend Dinosaur Museum, and Cypress Hills Swimming Pool, and keep costs down for the “Grade 6 Campout”.

This year’s “by donation” fundraiser took place on a cool, overcast day between noon and 2.30pm.

Five stations were set up for: “the lemonaders”, who kept incoming motorists refreshed and accept donations; rinsers, sprayers and “sudsers”; garbage and recycling; vacuuming; and detailing for the interior and the dash.

The students chose their first station, but were then rotated through all of them.

A full service, involving an exterior wash and interior clean, was promised. There was also the option of a convenient drop-off services. “Leave your vehicle with us and pick it up, fresh and clean, by 3.30pm”, was the pitch to motorists.

When the News-Times arrived at about 1.30pm, the noon rush had died down. By then, up to 40 vehicles had received a makeover.

Of course, it wasn’t all about hard work. As the stream of vehicles turned into a trickle, children had fun with water sprays, directing them at each other.

Getting soaked wasn’t such a bad thing on a late-summer afternoon.

For teacher Kennedy Glascock, who founded the event, it had already been a long day. She started getting everything prepared at 7am.

“It’s going really well today. It’s kind of nice, cooler day, which helps. The weather is perfect.”

With 46 children involved, the cleaning process was faster than last year.

Glascock said the school appreciated the community support.

“Anything we get we are grateful for.”

The fundraiser also served another purpose, said Glascock –

“It’s a good way for teacher to get to know the kids, and for the kids to get to know the teachers.”
