Post office steps need repairs again

Posted on January 13, 2015 by Maple Creek

It doesn’t seem that long ago that the post office steps were out of commission, but now residents are once again using the wheel chair accessible ramp to get their mail.

The main access was roped off last week due to the crumbling concrete steps – which were repaired three years ago.

Canada Post said the repairs may not have lasted as long as they could have since the work was done in the winter.

But this time around, the concrete will be poured after the snow melts and temperatures rise. Canada Post will be contracting out the work.

“They want to wait until the spring to set the concrete,” said Canada Post spokesperson Phil Legault after speaking with staff. “It will hopefully be done in the spring or early summer once everything thaws out properly. We don’t want to do anything rushed and have to do it again in another two years or six months.”

The last time the steps crumbled it was over a year before they were repaired and residents were able to use them again. In July 2011, a Canada Post spokesperson stated the first step in getting the repairs done was determining who owned the building – which is actually owned by Canada Post Corporation. The steps remained in disrepair and out-of-order for the next six months until a company from Canora completed the work in January 2012. Battling the cold temperatures, heaters and tarps had to be used for the work to be done.

Legault said this year’s repairs are a priority.

“We want to make sure that the repairs are done properly and done so that they’ll remain safe and complement the building.”
