Consul’s Brett and Bodie Gaff are set to compete with the best ropers from around the world. Larry Jensen of Climax will also be competing with Darcy Wallis of Swift Current.
It’s an opportunity the Gaffs are looking forward to.
“Bodie’s pretty excited,” Brett said of his son.
This is the first time the pair tried out for the finals. To do so, they travelled to Medicine Hat this summer, where they competed against over 150 other teams for one of the top spots. There are five different categories for ropers, ranging from numbers nine to 13. Category nine is for the better ropers.
To qualify for the finals, teams must win at least $5,000.
“Bodie wanted to go and see how we’d do,” Brett explained. “We just enjoy team roping, and if you get a chance to go like that, it’s a pretty good thing.”
The Gaffs were competing in category 10 and finished second with a time of 47.07. Jensen and Wallis followed closely behind with a time of 49.68.
“You have your good days and bad days and we just happened to rope good that day,” said Brett.
The World Series of Team Roping Finals will take place in Las Vegas Dec. 8-15. About 500 teams will contend in the number 10 category. Competitors will rope three steers, after which the top 44 will advance to the final.
Brett said they plan to make a good run and not beat themselves up.
“You’ve got to have a positive attitude,” he said. “You just take it one steer at a time, just like your practice.”
The Gaffs will be taking their best roping horses, Chic and Jethro, with them to compete.
“It’ll be exciting,” Brett said. “You never get the chance to rope at something like that very often.”
