As many as 320 dinners served

HEAT OF THE ACTION: Kevin Mulatz, foreground, is pictured preparing fries in the catering tent behind the Elks Hall.

For about three hours on Sunday, there was a long line of motorists inching along 5th Avenue. At times, the queue stretched up to 15 vehicles.
The message was clear: People love Maple Creek Elks’s fish fry dinners.
This year’s spring fundraiser saw as many as 320 dinners handed out between 4pm and 7pm.
It meant a busy time for everyone involved – the team cooking fish and fries, those preparing side orders, the baggers … and, of course, Doug Haroldson, who took motorists’ tickets and delivered their dinners inside blue bags.
The bags held two containers: one with servings of Alaksa pollock and fries; the other with coleslaw, baked beans and a roll. Lemons, ketchup and tartar sauces were included.
Traditionally, the fish fry is the Elks’s biggest fundraiser for the year. The group also holds a fish fry in the fall.
Since COVID-19, the $15 fish fry dinners have been a “take-out” only service. Sunday’s event continued this trend.
