The Maple Creek Senior Hawks kept the Shaunavon Badgers on their toes Friday night, but the effort was not enough to stop the league champions.
It was the perfect start for the Hawks who opened the scoring early with a beautifully finished goal from Troy Rapuano, assisted by Keegan Delorme and Nathyn Mortlock. But the celebrations were short-lived as the Badgers came fighting back two minutes later with a goal from Greg Coburn. It was a hard fought first period with equal action on each side that finished in a draw.
The second period was non-stop tape-to-tape action — each team scored one, a goal again from Rapuano for the Hawks and Travis Wasko for the Badgers.
The third period was where things didn’t look so hot for the Hawks. Though Hawks goalie Mike Tadjdeh put up an impressive display of skill, it wasn’t enough to stop the Badgers Mike Hill in his first game in the league. Hill put up an impressive hat-trick, and his presence was truly felt on the ice.
“We held in the game good, but then we made some mistakes in the third,” Coach Len Rodin said.”We made mistakes on goal two, three, and four which cost us and we gotta cut down on that. We got running around.”
Overall it was a strong performance by the team, with heated exchanges at a few moments with the gloves being dropped, but the team is looking like strong contenders as they look to get their first home victory Saturday against Cabri, which got the better of the Hawks last time they met.
