Acclaimed artist to appear at Broken Spoke Gallery for Aug. 21 festival

Andrew KissCelebrated artist Andrew Kiss will be making a special appearance at the Broken Spoke Fine Art Gallery for next month’s “Celebrate with Maple Creek” festival.
He will be giving a demonstration of his talents inside the gallery on Friday, August 20 and Saturday, August 21 – the day of the event.
“He will be bringing some of his Saskatchewan paintings,” said gallery owner, Blaine Filthaut.
“We are very honoured to have him here and invite the public to come out and meet him.”
Meanwhile, fresh appeals have gone out for help in running festival.
Three people are required to marshall the planned parade through the town. There is also a need for volunteers to run children’s activities, such as a bean bag toss, three-legged race, gunny sack race and egg toss.
Organization of the celebratory event continues apace as ideas become solidified into concrete plans. These include:
A beer garden at the Jasper Hotel;
Live music, featuring a band from Leader;
“Mystery” paper bag book sale at the Maple Creek branch library. For $5 people can buy a sealed bag of books, with the genre tagged on the outside. One of the books will not fit that genre;
Cowboy poetry
One food truck
These plans can be added to what is already in the works: an 8am pancake breakfast at the C.M. Glascock Building, a 10am-11.30am parade, a farmers’ market, a dunk tank, a booth run by the Maple Creek swimming pool fundraising committee, live music on a stage between the Post Office and the BMO (Bank of Montreal), and a 9pm movie, “The Apple Dumpling Gang”, a 1975 American comedy-western film.
A festival planning meeting was held on Wednesday, July 21, at the Town Hall. It was attended by Savannah Mass, communications & tourism manager, who is the driving force behind the event; Gillian Moch, the Town’s economic development officer; Ryan Moncrieff, from Rafter. R. Brewing Company; Monique Bonneau, from Cypress Hills-Grasslands Destination Area, and Chamber of Commerce directors Johanna Drury, from Drury Lane Fashions, and Betty Abbott, from Abbott Realty.
Another meeting is planned for August 11 at the same time and place. Members of the public are welcome to attend.
Mass explained the thinking behind the festival.
“It’s a celebration of every aspect of our community, from businesses and the Jasper Cultural & Historical Centre, to our residents and visitors who come to Maple Creek as one of their favourite destinations.”
