Young talent shines

Posted on January 11, 2022 by Maple Creek

Arms outstretched, eyes alight, mouth open, Weston Wasilow is a picture of joy after he scored for the Hawks during an Under 9 hockey tournament at Maple Creek Community Arena on Saturday.
His moment of delight came during a game between Maple Creek Hawks and Swift Current Sharks.
It typified a great day of hockey for more than 100 children from around the region. Other teams taking part included Eastend/Frontier Jets, Gull Lake Greyhounds, Herbert Hawks, Leader Flyers, Medicine Hat Knights, and Swift Current Kings.
Although, as you would expect, there was plenty of competitive spirit on display, the emphasis was on having fun. Scores weren’t officially tallied, but each team knew who was winning.
Games were made up of two 24-minute periods with 3-minute shifts. There was a 3-goal rule per player per period.
The rink was divided into two sections, allowing two games to be played simultaneously. Each team played three games.
In the first two games, beginning at 9.30am, Maple took on Medicine Hat, while Gull Lake played Swift Current Kings.
The Hawks went on to play Leader and, in one of the final two games of the tournament, played Swift Current Sharks. Eastend/Frontier Jets took on Gull Lake in the other final match-up.
Meaghan Drever, manager of the Maple Creek U9 Hawks, was delighted with .the success of the event.
“While official score-keeping was not kept for the tournament, the Maple Creek U9 Hawks showed strength over our opponents in all three games,” she said. “We had a victory over the Leader Flyers who had been undefeated so far this season and had been the only team Maple Creek had previously lost to so far this season. It was a nail-biter of a game.
“It takes a whole team to put on an event like this. Thanks to the sponsors, teams that attended, and volunteers to get all the jobs done to make it a very successful day for our team. The kids had a blast playing their favourite sport and that’s what it’s all about.”
