Father charged in child’s marijuana overdose

A 36-year-old Gull Lake man made his first court appearance last week after a toddler overdosed on marijuana.
The man, whose name cannot be released to protect the identity of the victim, appeared in Swift Current Provincial Court on Friday on charges of criminal negligence causing bodily harm, as well as impaired driving, disobeying a court order, possession of marijuana and breach of probation.
On Jan. 11, Swift Current Rural RCMP were called to Cypress Regional Hospital where a 20-month-old boy was unconscious and unresponsive to medical care.
“Someone else that attended the house found him in an unconscious state and called 9-1-1,” stated Cpl. Scott Hunter of the Gull Lake RCMP.
The young boy was kept in intensive care for two days before being released from hospital.
Toxicology indicated a high level of marijuana in the toddler’s blood.
An investigation revealed the boy’s father made cookies with marijuana in them. RCMP reported the boy had access to the cookies and overdosed on marijuana, which caused severe seizures.
“With the state of mind of the people that were in the house at the time, no one can tell us for certain exactly what happened,” Hunter said.
The accused was held in custody until his first court appearance last week. He will be back in Swift Current Provincial Court on March 23.
