Resident pens open letter to town council

Where has common sense gone?
Friends of mine misplaced their business and residential Town of Maple Creek utility bills recently, but realized their oversight (8 days later) and immediately forwarded full payment.
Upon receiving their next bills three months later, they immediately paid the totals, including (late payment) interest charges as indicated on the bills.
Assuming this matter was behind them, they were completely caught off-guard when they received, in the mail, two separate notices – one for 4 cents and one for 6 cents. Postage for the Town Office to mail these statements was $1.92.
It certainly does not take an accountant to see that you will quickly run out of money if you spend $1.92 to make 10 cents – unless, of course, Council can simply raise the commercial and residential property taxes any time to cover such examples of mismanagement.
I believe incidents such as this show disrespect for long-term ratepayers. These particular friends and neighbours have paid utility bills and property taxes in Maple Creek for more than 40 years, as have their parents before them, as do their children now. I am sure they would have responded promptly, with apologies, to a polite phone call from Town office.
Where has the common sense gone?
Respectfully,

Don Lewis
