Man charged with arson

Posted on October 31, 2013 by Maple Creek

A man from the Piapot area has been charged following an arson at a residence in the village earlier this month.

Garrett Klien, 26, was charged with trespassing at night, mischief and arson after Maple Creek RCMP and the Piapot Fire Department responded to a fire at a house in Piapot on Oct. 19.
Emergency responders were called to the residence of Michael Phillips at 3 a.m., where they found the exterior of the building had been set on fire, resulting in minor damages. Phillips was home at the time but was unharmed.
RCMP obtained information from witnesses who identified Klien as the individual involved. He was subsequently arrested and held in police custody until his first court appearance in Swift Current Provincial Court on Oct. 21. He was then released under the conditions that he must not enter the village of Piapot, abstain from the use of alcohol and have no contact with Phillips.
Police report they have no information indicating why Klien would attempt to set Phillips’ house on fire. Alcohol was involved in the incident. Klien has no criminal record. He is scheduled to appear in Swift Current Provincial Court on Nov. 27 to enter a plea.
