Concern has been expressed about the closure of rural community banks across Saskatchewan.

It follows news that the Bank of Montreal (BMO) branch in Maple Creek will close on Friday, June 19, 2026.

In a statement to the News-Times, the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) said rural bank closures had left many communities feeling abandoned and vulnerable.

“These banks have long served as financial and social hubs, providing trust, familiarity, and stability for residents.

“Their closure hits elderly citizens especially hard, as many are not comfortable with online banking and face significant challenges travelling long distances to larger centres for basic services.

“The loss of local branches also means the loss of good jobs in these communities, further weakening already fragile rural economies. Preserving in-person banking is essential to the long-term vitality of rural Saskatchewan.”

A closure notice has been placed at the entrance to the BMO building at 129 Jasper Street.

It says that after the branch closes customers can be served at Dunmore & Carry Drive branch, 3214 Dunmore RD S.E., Medicine Hat, Alberta T1B 2X2.

According to the notice, the Regional Vice President, and the Branch Manager, will be available in branch for an information drop-in session on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, during regular branch hours.

BMO has had a presence in Maple Creek for more 120 years, making it one of the oldest businesses in town.
