Pool staffing update for coming season

Maple Creek News
Many of last year’s swimming pool staff will be working for the 2026 season.
Meanwhile, efforts continue to recruit additional workers, including a pool supervisor and assistant pool supervisor.
The pool staffing update was given by Barry Elliott, chief administrative officer, at the January 28 Maple Creek Town Council meeting.
“All swimming pool staff who have been confirmed for work have been informed that the Town will support them in acquiring further credentials to expand their capabilities and skill sets for work at the swimming pool,” he said.
Councillor Betty Abbott asked how many more staff were still being sought and about the status of efforts to hold swimming lessons.
Elliott said he did not yet know whether extra staff or volunteers will be required for supervising the top of waterslides, which will be in operation this season. Legislative changes to the guidelines on waterslide staffing were reported to be in the offing.
“I will know more on that later,” he said.
On the possibility of swimming lessons, Elliott said: “I have had a conversation with a number of the pool staff. We’ve let them know in their recall letters that the Council is willing to support them in acquiring some of the additional qualifications so that they can do the instruction. So, the whole schedule for the training is in play right now. SHA (Saskatchewan Health Authority) inform me that they don’t expect to have pool operator training, which is a good component for them to have, until June, but there are already other opportunities for the instructor training and some of the lifeguard qualifications as well.”
Elliott said the waterslides were expected to be ready for the summer.
He had been assured that modifications, including repairing and replacing pieces that had arrived slightly damaged, would be completed in time.
“I’m just hoping that all of the design elements pass without a hitch. I fully expect they will.”
