Salary levels for Town of Maple Creek’s out-of-scope staff are to be adjusted to reflect a rise in the Consumer Price Index.

Maple Creek Town Council authorized a 2.2% increase for all employment positions and salary grid levels included within the Out-Of-Scope Salary Grid, effective January 1, 2026.

Speaking at the January 28 meeting, Councillor Tina Cresswell said: “Of course, I will support this because I support our staff, and I think that they do a wonderful job.”

In a report to Council, Barry Elliott, chief administrative officer, said a lengthy process was undertaken by MNP (formerly Meyers Norris Penny) in 2024 to develop a compensation strategy and accompanying salary grid for out-of-scope staff.

Afterwards, Council passed a resolution at a Special Meeting on September 5, 2024, which confirmed acceptance of the 2024 Out-Of-Scope Salary Grid.

As part of putting this grid in place, said Elliott, Council directed administration to carry out an annual review of the Saskatchewan Consumer Price Index (CPI).

“The intent of this review is to ensure that Council is apprised of the annual changes realized in the CPI from year to year across the province. This review affords Council the opportunity to consider adjustment of the overall out-of-scope salary grid in a continuing effort to ensure the grid remains relevant and comparable within the municipal realm on an annual basis.”

Elliott said administration had collected the Saskatchewan Consumer Price Index information for December 2024-December 2025 as provided by the Province of Saskatchewan on its website.

The information shows that the CPI increased by 2.2% within this period.

In light of this, said Elliott, administration recommended that all salary levels within the salary grid be adjusted accordingly.

Elliott said Council’s adoption of the recommendation would result in an increase from the 2025 budget that is estimated to be about $14,008.

“This amount is affected by the discontinuance of the Economic Development Officer position and the introduction of the new Director of Community Services position.”
