One year on, the pain remains, the memories are still sharp.
Gina Samson, however, was determined that Saturday’s anniversary supper would have a mood of celebration. It was in keeping with husband Edwin’s life-affirming personality and his joy-filled legacy.
“I remember his laughter, kindness, and love,” Gina said.
“He may be gone, but his spirit lives on in my heart and the lessons he taught me.”
A visual reminder of Edwin was in a display near the back of the Royal Canadian Legion Hall.
It contained balloons, flowers, “in loving memory” cards, photographs and a guitar.
One photo was of Edwin on a deck, with pines in the background. The other two showed Edwin playing guitar.
The display enhanced the feeling that Edwin was present, enjoying the food and fellowship.
Scores of family members, friends, and members of the community came together for the anniversary celebration, which was a chance to thank those who supported Gina during the most difficult year of her life.
The outpouring of kindness and love helped sustain her.
Marianne Gordon was invited to start the event with an opening prayer.
“We ask that you wrap comforting arms around everyone gathered here today – especially Edwin’s family, and those who held him the closest,” she said.
“As we share our stories, our tears, and our smiles today, let this gathering be a testament to the lasting impact of his life and legacy.”
Michelle McKenzie, the mayor, had been unable to attend the gathering. Nevertheless, her words filled the room, read out by Councillor Holly Gutfreund.
“As we remember Edwin today, let us also celebrate him. Let us remember his laughter, his generosity, his character, and the countless moments that continue to bring smiles and comfort to those who loved him. Though he is no longer physically with us, the impact of his life remains.”
Today, the News-Times prints Gordon’s prayer and McKenzie’s words in full.
In her message, Gina said: “Today, we gather to remember and honour the one-year anniversary of my husband’s passing.
“It’s hard to believe it’s been a year since the house fire took him from us.
“Though time has passed, the pain remains, and memories still feel fresh. I remember his laughter, kindness, and love. He may be gone, but his spirit lives on in my heart and the lessons he taught me.
“As I navigate life without him, I find strength in the memories we shared and the love that remains. I’m grateful for the support of family and friends who’ve helped me through this difficult time.
“To my husband, I say: I miss you more than words can express, but I know you’re with me, guiding me through life’s challenges. Your memory will live on, and I’ll continue to cherish our time together.
“Rest in in peace, my love. You’re forever in my heart.”
Danielle Samson then came forward to bless a multi-course Filipino meal cooked by Rommel Lanzuela, who used to be a chef at Ivan’s Restaurant at Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park.
Long lines immediately developed at a chain of tables set up along one side of the hall.
Gina later visited tables, handing out “thank you” cards from the Samson family.
Inside was a message that read:
“It’s easy to say thank you, but it’s harder to convey the heartfelt gratitude felt today. Your thoughtfulness means more than words can say.”
