Toxic substances have been kept out of regular garbage and the landfill, thanks to Saturday’s household hazardous waste collection.

The 8am-1pm event took place in the Maple Creek Legion parking lot and was open to residents from the town and surrounding RMs, as well as Nekaneet First Nation.

Among items deposited were muriatic acid, asbestos, lithium batteries, aerosols, propane, bear spray, oil filters, light bulbs and paint.

Collecting the waste were Shawn Collinson and Colby Johnson, hazardous waste recovery technicians from GFL Environmental.

Present too was Barry Elliott, the Town of Maple Creek’s chief administrative officer. When the News-Times dropped by at around noon, Elliott was on a trailer sorting through dozens of paint cans.

He said the Town hoped to turn the household hazardous waste collection into an even bigger event next year and beyond. Collinson said items would be taken to GFL’s site in Saskatoon for processing.
