Maple Creek’s sidewalks are being improved.

Priority has been given to the two blocks on the north and south side of 2nd Avenue near the planned daycare centre.

Money for the project comes from the 2027 sidewalk budget allocation.

At its September 23 meeting, Maple Creek Town Council agreed to pre-approve spending $225,000 from next year’s budget.

This had been recommended by the Community, Planning and Culture Committee at its September 14 meeting.

Councillor Mike Stork asked when work would get under way.

Barry Elliott, chief administrative officer, said later in the week or by Monday, September 28, at the latest.

“Do we know what the plan is?” Councillor Stork asked.

“The first priority is the two blocks on both the north and south side of 2nd Avenue in the vicinity of the new daycare facility,” said Elliott”.

“And then there are a number of other spot locations around town that Andrew (Andrew Stevenson, interim director of operations) has pointed out to them. I will have to get a summary of those specific locations for Council. I don’t have that this evening.”

Councillor Len Barkman said sidewalk work was being done at the end of the season, not the prime of the season.

He wondered whether contractors could be told that the work should be done sooner, rather than later, to avoid potential weather problems.

Elliott said the contractors were finishing significant projects.

Councillor Stork also questioned the contractors’ timing.

“They are the ones who approached us about doing two years worth in one year
