An appeal has gone out for Maple Creek Housing Authority members. It comes amid efforts to restart the board after a period of dormancy.
Local housing authorities manage affordable rental housing on behalf of Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC) in more than 260 communities across Saskatchewan.
At the October 14 Town Council meeting, Councillor Mike Stork said only two people, including himself, had been approved to sit on the committee.
“We are three people short. It is frustrating,” he said. “You know, it’s a year later. We’ve lost people who were planning to sit and are now presumably for one reason or another not on that committee, which means we don’t have a committee yet.
“So, with permission from Council, I’d like to to make an appeal to the townspeople and write a letter to the editor and see if we can drum up some more support.”
Councillor Stork added: “I think it’s important. I think local representation is important.”
Councillor Betty Abbott asked about the time commitment for housing authority volunteers.
Michelle McKenzie, the mayor, said she believed it was monthly.
She added that volunteers would also need to undergo training.
In a push for more volunteers, the Town of Maple Creek said a local housing authority was important for supporting affordable accommodation by ensuring low-income individuals, families, and seniors have access to safe, secure, and affordable homes.

No housing experience is needed, say the Town. Diverse perspectives are valued, from bringing business skills and community connections to having a big heart and unique life experiences.
