The Southwest Female Midget Cyclones went to Canmore, AB, for “Shoot for the Summit Female Hockey Challenge” and breezed through the competition claiming a gold victory. The team is made up of girls from Maple Creek, Tompkins, Gull Lake, Shaunovan, Cabri, and Swift Current.
It was their first time in the competition but it may have seemed otherwise the way they cruized through their opponents.
“It’s been a while since this team has won something but going there and winning like they did brought a lot of confidence to the team and made them believe in themselves more,” coach Sean Chapman said.
The Midget Cyclones outshot teams on average 40 to 10 each game.
Round Robin Results:
Southwest Cyclones 8 Canmore Eagles 0
Southwest Cyclones 9 Calgary 1
Southwest Cyclones 0 Endmoor Vipers 0
The round robin results put them into the gold medal final where they met the Endmoor Vipers once again and came out on top with a 2-0 victory.
“The team executed the game plan perfectly for each game which included making sure we had a strong, quick fore-check as well as an airtight defensive zone coverage. The single largest factor to us being successful was our work ethic,” Chapman said. “The tournament was very well run and the officiating was superb-overall it was a tremendous weekend.”
