The Town of Maple Creek is taking steps to overcome a spring staffing shortage.
Barry Elliott, chief administrative officer, said Public Works numbers had been down.
”So, we have been trying to fill some positions. We are filling them now. We had a fellow start yesterday, and another person is starting very soon.”
Elliott said the Town had also hired a frontline landfill attendant after the departure of Lynn Needham, whose position as environmental services manager no longer exists.
”We have got another set of hands working alongside the landfill staff, which can also be called on to work in Public Works, if needed, or Parks.”
Employee versatility is something the Town is aiming for through cross-training and extra training.
”So, we are working hard on that and it is working well. It is still early because we are hiring people now. We are very excited about the prospects.”
At the landfill, said Elliott, great efforts had been made to spruce up the site.
”It is almost pristine for a landfill. Landfill and Public Works staff have been working together to clean the grounds up.”
The hiring of a new community services director, added Elliott, means a transitional period. He said he was very much looking forward to Chuck Erman starting his duties on June 29.
